Decarbonising Agriculture in Northumberland

Overview

The Rural Design Centre has been working in partnership with Northumberland County Council (NCC) to support farmers across the county keen to reduce their emissions from agriculture. The NCC Climate Action Plan has identified a growing concern with emissions from the farming and agriculture sector, and will be using the facilitated workshops to support the co-design of solutions.

Project Journey

The project was been made possible with funding from Innovate UK, and their Design Foundations: Net Zero Environments call. The project launched in December 2023 and ran for 6 months. Outcomes of the project are currently being assessed for future piloting work and value opportunities with stakeholders.

Support for the project comes from the Newcastle University Farms, the NFU and Northumberland National Park.

Impacts

Through expert guests, peer to peer learning and facilitated workshops, the project has delivered specific advice, encouraged discussion and gathered insights from farmers as they move towards lowering their emissions. This has involved exploring circular economies, food and supply chains and other influencing factors or commercial pressures.
